[독서][영어] DK Eye Wonder : Bugs

동네에 꽤 큰 도서관이 있어서 어릴 때부터 자주 갔고, 지금도 1~2주에 한번씩 도서관에 들려 책을 꾸준히 빌려오고 있는데, DK Eye Wonder: Bugs 에 대해 글을 써보고자 합니다.

먼저 이 책에 대해 간단히 소개하고, 책에서 다루는 영어 단어 등에 대해 살펴보겠습니다.

 

책 소개

이 책은 곤충에 대해 알려주는 입문서로 곤충의 다양한 종류, 곤충의 몸 구조, 곤충의 생활 방식 등에 대해 아이의 눈높이에서 자세히 설명할 뿐 만 아니라 곤충의 진화, 곤충의 생태계 역할, 곤충과 인간의 관계 등에 대해서도 다룹니다.

 

이 책의 특징은 다음과 같습니다.

• 곤충에 대한 기본적인 정보를 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 흥미롭고 자세한 사진과 그림을 많이 사용합니다.
• 곤충의 다양한 종류를 체계적으로 분류하여 이해하기 쉽습니다.
• 곤충의 몸 구조와 기능에 대해 자세히 설명하며, 각 곤충들의 특징을 잘 표현하고 있습니다.
• 곤충의 생활 방식과 진화에 대해 아이들이 이해할 수 있게 쉽게 설명합니다.

영어 독서

영어로 된 책을 읽는 관점에서 장점은 곤충에 대한 관심이 있었던 아이라면 곤충에 관련된 내용을 설명할 때 아이가 흥미를 가지고 집중할 수 있도록 구성되어 있고, 사진을 보면 모르는 단어라도 의미하는지 유추할 수 있게 사진과 단어를 잘 매치해놓았다는 점입니다. 예로 책의 내용 중 한 부분을 보면, 관련 주제에 대해 상당히 꼼꼼하게 다루면서 어떤 것을 설명하는 것인지 직관적으로 이해할 수 있게 구성된 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

Caterpillar stage(애벌레 단계) → Pupa stage(번데기 단계) → Emerging(우화) → Bufferfly(나비) 와 같이 애벌레에서 나비가 되기 위한 과정을 설명하고 있습니다. 각 단계에 대해 아이들이 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 자세한 사진을 이용하여 생소한 단어임에도 한 눈에 알 수 있습니다.

 

자세한 사진을 통한 모르는 단어의 유추는 장점이 될 수도 있지만, 한국에서 자란 아이들에게는 생소한 단어가 많이 나온다는 것은 단점으로 와닿기도 할 것 같습니다.

 

예를 들면 다음과 같은 단어들이 있습니다. 거미(Spider)에 대한 단어는 주변에서 자주 접하지만, 거미류(arachnid) 라고 하는 단어와 같이 영어로 접할 기회가 많지 않은, 그래서 독서를 할 때 쉽게 유추하기 어려운 부분들이 나옵니다.

 

그리고 책을 보면서 정확한 bug 에 대해 알게 되어 bug 가 무엇인지 남겨놓습니다.

아이와 책을 읽으면서 잘 몰랐던 단어들을 정리해보았습니다. 책을 읽어보실 분들은 어떤 단어들이 나오는지 참고해보시면 좋을 것 같습니다. (사진과 함께 나오는 경우들이 많아 정확한 뜻은 몰라도 어떤 이야기를 하는지 짐작은 할 수 있었던 것 같습니다.)

• arachnid: a kind of animal that has eight legs and a body formed of two parts
• creepy-crawly: an unpleasant worm, insect, or spider
• millipede: a small creature that is like an insect and that has a long, thin body with many legs
• proboscis:a long, thin tube that forms part of the mouth of some insects (such as a butterfly)
• katydid: a large green insect that looks like a large grasshopper
• camouflage: a way of hiding something (such as military equipment) by painting it or covering it with leaves or branches to make it harder to see
• cunning: getting what is wanted in a clever and often deceptive way
• metamorphosis: a major change in the appearance or character of someone or something
• saliva: the liquid produced in your mouth that keeps your mouth moist and makes it easier to swallow food
• pierce: to make a hole in or through (something)
• mite: a very small creature that often lives on plants, animals, and foods see also DUST MITE
• louse: a type of small insect that lives on the bodies of people or animals
• mystical: having a spiritual meaning that is difficult to see or understand
• locust: a type of grasshopper that travels in very large groups and that can cause great destruction by eating crops
• arthropod: an invertebrate animal of the large phylum Arthropoda , such as an insect, spider, or crustacean.
• decay: the process or result of being slowly destroyed by natural processes
• gland: an organ in the body that makes a substance (such as saliva, sweat, or bile) which is used by the body
• pollination: Pollination is required for plants to produce seeds.
• solitary: without anyone or anything else, not involving or including anyone or anything else

 

정리를 하다보니 아이보다 내가 모르는 단어가 더 많은 거 같아 부끄럽네요. 영어 유치원을 다니면서 다양한 분야를 읽었던 것 경험이 내가 접하지 못 했던 단어를 아는데 많은 도움이 된 거 같네요.
